Is That What I Look Like?

Virtually all objects reflect the light that falls upon it and therefore we are able to determine what that object is. No matter how smooth a surface may appear, the reflected light comes off of a multitude of tiny rough surfaces which make up an object. The reflected light gives us information about such details as its texture, its shape, its size, its color and thereby we are able to determine what that object is. We are able to recognize people because the light which strikes us is reflecting back our unique features to an observer. If an object were absolutely smooth we would be able to see an image of the source of light which is being reflected off of an object. In fact, just apply some oily substance to your face and the increased smoothness of your face will reflect more of the light source and obscure the clarity of your facial features.

There are objects that have such a smooth surface that they reflect light in such a way that you can see the source of the light. A high quality mirror is a plate of glass that has been covered with silver on one side. Because the silver is laid down in such a smooth manner by being applied to a piece of glass, as you look in this silver coated piece of glass, all the light which is being reflected off of you is reflected back in a consistent manner. In fact, if you were to look closely into a mirror you would see a double image, one much fainter than the other. Both the glass and the silver backing are both reflecting back the light that is coming off of you. If that mirror is extremely old, you might notice that the image is distorted at various place on that mirror because older glass was not able to be made as smooth as it is today. Therefore, the extremely smooth silver backing, which follows the surface of the glass, is also distorted. In fact, if one intentionally warps the glass, the image can be warped to make one appear thinner, taller, fatter, or smaller.

There is a spiritual mirror that we are called upon by God to look into. As we look into it, it is designed to speak to us about our spiritual condition. The Bible says it this way, "For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was ( James 1:23-24)."

God says that a physical mirror speaks back to us and when we look into it we are supposed to hear its message and take appropriate action. God says that there are those who do not take appropriate action after looking into a mirror and hearing a message about their appearance. God compares such a person to one who hears the Word of God and then chooses to do nothing when he sees himself. Although this holy mirror, called the Word , is old, it was made of the absolutely perfect holy glass of heaven. It has the purest celestial silver reflective backing which, without exception, accurately echoes truth. The light which comes off of the rough surfaces of humanity is accurately mirrored. This divine mirror furnishes us with information about such details as our texture, stormy or tranquil, our shape, worldly or godly, our size, proud or humble, even our mood's color, jealous, envious, angry, peaceful, and even more details than we could catalogue here.

Why do people struggle with life, with relationships, with family and friends? One of the answers is found in the fact that people are not impacted by this heavenly mirror. Some fail to even look into the mirror of the Word. Others look into this holy mirror and then disregard what the mirror of the Word is clearly reflecting back. Still others spend far too little time to see what the mirror is really saying. Others look into the mirror so sporadically that they are unaware of their daily condition. Yet others only look at themselves in the distorted mirrors of the world which lack the purest of glass and/or have been purposefully distorted to make us look different than we are. All result in a failure to grow into the people that God intended for us to be! It will only be as we expose ourselves to the truth about ourselves by looking into the Word of God and then taking appropriate action to correct what we see, that we will find ourselves honestly changing into the image of our wonderful Lord. II Corinthians 3:18 states, "But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."
